Adopting the “Just Do It” Attitude

Monday, 25 July 2016 14:54 Written by

If you have this kind of attitude – say yes and then learn – then there probably isn’t much you can’t do. You never settle, your work is impeccable, and you will probably go extremely far in life… because you just do it and figure out the details later. You have absolute confidence in your ability to learn and you trust your instincts.

This type of attitude works for a few different reasons, but one of the main reasons is because it simplifies everything. By adopting an attitude of just going for it, you take away your mind’s incessant need to throw doubts, insecurities, and excuses your way. Those negative thoughts have no space or clout because you’ve already made the decision to go for it, so the debate never happens in the first place. No debate, no negative thoughts to talk yourself out of taking advantage of the opportunity at hand.

Pure, focused action. The simplicity and certainty of it serve a highly productive purpose, which is probably why Nike has claimed the tagline since 1988.

So, aside from simplicity and certainty, what are some other benefits of having a ‘just do it’ attitude? While some of these are a bit superficial, others are very personal and internal, and I’m sure anyone who has adopted this point of view has their own take on the benefits. If you do, please get in touch with us or leave a comment!

1. Simplicity and certainty. Covered this a minute ago.

2. Confidence – whether you want it or not! If you just go for it whenever an opportunity comes up, not only will you seem confident but you will find that you’ll begin feeling more confident as well. Taking action feels good; accomplishing things feels good; seeing a final product or creation feels good; knowing that you grabbed the opportunities you really wanted feels good.

3. It’s just forceful enough to be intimidating. Sure, you might not typically intimidate yourself, but that part of you that the bully voices in your head keep trying to stifle – the dreamer who is also a doer – that little part needs some intimidation from your rational mind to suck it up and do what needs to be done, no matter what. Don’t worry… the dreamer/doer usually grows pretty fast once there’s a taste of victory ;).

4. You will learn your own strength and capability. This means you’ll also get to know yourself much better, which is excellent… especially when you’re on your way toward achieving something amazing. Keep going!

5. Practice makes perfect. Once you’ve gone for it a few times without the debate and negative, ‘talk-me-out-of-it-because-it’s-too-different’ talk in your head, that talk will quiet down and even stop naturally. It may rear its ugly head from time to time, but just keep on going for those opportunities.

Think about it this way… “Let’s do it,” is a much faster and more concise thing to say than, “I need to think about it.” Thinking about something too much affords your mind and thoughts the time they need to give their negative and doubtful input. So… what do you say? Will you just do it and learn along the way? Or will you play it safe in the familiar and allow your self-doubt to make your decisions for you?
